Le Godfather

March 13th, 2010 by It's Trent, Bitch!

Last night David and I ventured south to Manhattan Beach to meet up with our friends Josh and Emma and their friend Andrew for dinner and a movie. First, we hit a Middle Eastern restaurant called Open Sesame (which was pretty fantastic but my heart still belongs to Cedar Gardens back home in Dearborn, MI) and then we went to see the Academy Award-nominated for Foreign Language Film A Prophet:

A Prophet is a French film that tells the tale of a young man doing time in prison … but it is so much more than that. There aren’t enough words to express how impressed I was with this film. It is not your conventional film in that it is not predictable and the story is wholly entertaining. The acting performances were utterly superb. It is deffo one of those film’s I would heartily recommend to any one. I think we decided that a good description of the film is The Shawshank Redemption meets The Godfather. It’s gritty and grisly in some parts but the whole thing just works. I had no idea how the movie would resolve itself … which is a great way to keep the audience engrossed. We all loved the movie very much … it’s very clear that this film got robbed of the Best Foreign Film trophy at the Academy Awards this year … it really should’ve won.

I have to say, and this has nothing to do with the film itself, I had no idea that French prisons were so posh! If US inmates were able to get day leaves from prison to work on the outside then our prisons would be empty cuz they’d all just leave and never come back. Gotta love the French sensibility of paying for one’s crimes. Anyways … see this movie while you can. It’s really excellent.

Today is a beautifully sunny day … I’m hoping to get out and enjoy some of it.

DON’T FORGET TO TURN YOUR CLOCKS FORWARD TONIGHT … it’s Daylight’s Savings Time again! Spring Forward, y’all!!
