A Winner Is You

March 29th, 2009 by gammastar

About

A Winner is You is a popular catchphrase used in online conversations to congratulate someone else’s accomplishment, oftentimes in sarcasm.

Origin

The oddball phrase “A Winner is You” actually stems from the 1986 NES game Pro Wrestling, wherein the player was given a short congratulatory message after beating the match opponent. Similar to other poorly translated videogame messages, its broken English grammar certainly stuck with those who’ve seen it and continues to be celebrated today.

Spread

Although the game “Pro Wrestling” was actually released in 1987, the meme itself actually began in January 2004, as seen in the Google Insights chart. While its popularity and search instances remain relatively high in volume (in the United States), it is also declining once again (as of 2010).

“A Winner is You” is also an achievement in Red Faction.

Usage

The phrase is commonly used in online chat and discussion forums as a sarcastic way of showing one’s joy or approval. Here’s an example of its usage in dialogue:

User 1: Dude, I totally just won $3,000!

User 2: A winner is you, man.

There are several popular variations of the phrase, including “A winrar is you” and “You’re winner,” another faulty quote found in the 2003 racing game Big Rigs. While the wording is changed in each variation, the meaning and usage still remain the same: “you win; good for you.”

YouTube Videos

A few YouTube videos use the meme to a comical effect by combining win screens with something completely different. In these videos, the meme’s potential for humor is realized. The following example combines the “Big Rigs” win screen with Star Trek:

References in Other Video Games

The phrase has been referenced in several online flash games, such as “I Don’t Even Know” by Lawlolawl Studios,“Madness Accelerant” and “Madness Regent” by Tom Fulp as a reward for finishing the game or completing a specific achievement. “The Impossible Quiz” by SlappMeDo, an incredibly hard online quiz, takes things a little further by ending the game with nothing but the phrase “Ur Winnar” and a picture of a trophy.

  • In the Nintendo DS game “Mario and Luigi: Bowser’s Inside Story”, the main antagonist, disguised as a salesman, shouts “A winner is you!” after Bowser wins himself a vacuum ’shroom.
  • In the WiiWare game “Strongbad’s Cool Game for Attractive People”, Coach Z explains to the main protagonist and title character that he isn’t entirely sure what happens if he wins the Halfathalon and earns a trophy. However, he goes on to reference the meme by saying “But a winner is you! Isn’t that good enough?”.
  • A reference to this meme is uttered by the character Behemoth in the game “Final Fantasy Fables: Chocobo Tales”, when he says, surprised that you beat him, “A winner is you? Aeeeioooooo!”.

Ran Ran Ru (らんらんるー)

About

Ran Ran Ru (らんらんるー or phonetically written in Katakana as ランランルー) is a series of MAD video remixes based on Japanese commercials involving Ronald McDonald (“Donald McDonald” in Japan). “Ran Ran Ru” is a gimmicky expression used by Ronald, usually in combination with hand gestures to signify happiness.

Origin

Between 2004 and 2007, a series of small ads named “Ronald Rumors” (ドナルドのうわさ – Donald no uwasa) were broadcast on Japanese television. They featured a Japanese version of Ronald McDonald asking trivial questions about himself. The answers were then posted on the official McDonald’s website. These ads were mostly targeted towards children and, in most of them, Ronald is doing his infamous Ran Ran Ru.

The following video is one of the original Ronald Rumors commercials where Ronald uses Ran Ran Ru.

You can find a more detailed explanation of the ad campaign in this Japanese Wikipedia article (translated)

MADs and Remixes

Seing a huge potential in these short commercials, Nico Nico Douga users were the first to jump on the remixes.

The first MAD using Ran Ran Ru was created on May 3rd 2007 by NND user Dandelionsecond, mashing the commercial with clips from the Japanese TV series Ultraman Mebius. (The original video on NND is here. [Registration Required])

Within the year 2007, about 400 videos featuring Ran Ran Ru were uploaded solely on Nico Nico Douga.

On December 6th 2007, NND user 秘宝伝 (hihou den) uploaded a Ran Ran Ru remix mashed up with the Touhou Project song U.N.オーエンは彼女なのか? (U.N. Owen Was Her?). (The original video on NND is here. [Registration Required])

However, the most infamous MAD and first video exposing Ran Ran Ru to Western audiences, also including U.N. Owen Was Her, was uploaded to NND on January 1st 2008 by user みくる (mikuru). The video was reuploaded to YouTube the same day by user mrhorseshoe and was renamed Ronald McDonald Insanity. (The original video on NND is here. [Registration Required])

A year and a half after the original upload, the NND version has acquired nearly half a million views where the YouTube reupload has garnished over four million views.

As more duplicate copies would be uploaded to YouTube, the video would be used as a bait and switch similar to the practice of Rickrolling and would be dubbed the “McRoll”.

In a March 11, 2010 article on Australian site PC World, Ronald McDonald Insanity is named one of the most disturbing YouTube videos of all time.

These videos would then lead to a new trend of remixes on YouTube:

Other Influences

2channel

Ronald McDonald has been a character often used in Shift-Jis art on Japanese Bulletin boards for a long time (at least 2006) (some examples can be seen here) but the spread of Ran Ran Ru has further expanded Ronald as a character on the Japanese web.

M.U.G.E.N

Ronald was introduced as a playable character in the freeware fighting game engine MUGEN on December 17th 2007. Some of his moves and sound clips are borrowed directly from Ran Ran Ru.

McGiygas

A recent Ronald “counterpart” has appeared on the Western web. Named “McGiygas”, this new character is supposed to embody an evil and creepier version of Ronald McDonald utilizing clips from Ran Ran Ru in order to parody the character Giygas, the final boss in the SNES game Earthbound.
