About

“I’ll Take a Potato Chip and EAT IT” is a YouTube Poop fad based on a memorable scene from Death Note, a popular TV anime series. In this scene, Light Yagami (the main character) grabs a potato chip out of the bag and takes a dramatic pause to utter “I’ll take a potato chip… AND EAT IT!” before taking a bite at it. Played out in slow motion, the friggin’ potato chip shatters into sparkling dust.

Death Note & Potato Chips

Death Note (デスノート, Desu Nōto) is a Japanese manga series created by writer Tsugumi Ohba and manga artist Takeshi Obata. The story centers on Light Yagami, a college student who turns into a ruthless vigilante after finding the Death Note, a supernatural book that can literally kill people. Chasing the trail of Light’s serial murders is a mysterious detective only known as L, who installs hidden cameras in Light’s room to monitor his moves. But well aware of the surveillance, Light manages to plot his next murder by hiding his tools inside a bag of potato chips. whaaaaaaat.

Origin & Spread

The Youtube Poop fad began just prior to the making its US debut on October 20, 2007.

On July 4th, 2007, Youtube user YasashiiYuki uploaded “Epic Potato Chip Eating Death Note Live Action”, using a scene taken not from the Anime, but from the recently released Japanese Live Action Death Note film. The clip has been viewed over 80,000 times.

On December 8th, 2007, Hikaripop uploaded a video titled “Anime Poop – LIGHT TAKES A POTATO CHIP.”

The most influential instance of Death Note YTP surfaced on December 27th, 2007, a five second soundbite of “I’ll Take a Potato Chip …and EAT IT” excerpted from the original scene:

While it is not an example of YouTube Poop per se, the exploitable clip served as a jumping board for many YTP derivatives that followed on YouTube. As of January 2010, it has been viewed over a million times and ranked the #6 Top Favorited and #20 Top Rated video in the Education category.

Other YTP Videos

On August 26th, 2007, Youtube user HurricaneFaFniR uploaded “Death Hotel Note,” a Legend of Zelda Poop using the English Dubbed audio from the Death Note live action film’s trailer.

Days later, on August 29th, another Death Note Youtube Poop was made.

I’ll Take A Potato Chip….And OM NOM NOM NOM

On February 27th, 2008, infamous YTP artist Walrusguy uploaded “YTP DEFINITELY A GOOD SEASON FOR POTATO CHIPS,” further spreading the meme to his considerably large audiences. The original upload has been taken down, but a copy has been made available via WalrusguyMemorial.

How Do I Shot Web?

About

How Do I Shot Web? is a popular catchphrase used in online conversations to playfully poke fun at someone else’s or one’s own n00bish behaviors. Remembered by many as one of the earlier internet memes, both the phrasal template and its derivatives remain popular to this day, though it is mostly used as a silly reference for nostalgia.

Origin

There are conflicting reports regarding the birth of “How do I shot web?”, but numerous reference materials point to Something Awful forums’s goons-only FPS game server as the earliest known site of origin. According to firsthand accounts, it was originally quoted during a round of Natural Selection (2002), wherein the alien enemies’ primary choice of weapon was shooting spider webs. Out of sheer frustration, a newbie player repeatedly asked “how do i shot web?” in imperfect English, which presumably meant “How Do I Shoot Web.” The earliest Google sighting of the phrase was reported as early as in February 2003.

Spread

This grammatically strange phrase initially spread as an in-joke among SA users who frequented FYAD forums, but reached across the boards on Something Awful, eventually reaching 4chan’s /b/, where an image macro of Spider-Man saying the phrase spawned hundreds of other pictures containing the phrase.

The phrase has been also altered to reference other memes, such as “how do i shoop da woop” and “bitches don’t know how to shot web”.

Usage & Variations

Today, there are countless variations of the “How do I shot web?” phrase, using a past tense verb + noun combination in replacement of “shot web?” In addition, one may respond to any of these “How Do I” queries with an ASCII-based catchphrase, I Dunno LOL ¯\(°_o)/¯.
